Fall in Love with our Red Velvet Cake

Valentine’s day is approaching and love is in the air. What better way to delight your loved ones than with a tasty treat? Ruby red and ever so seductive, our red velvet cake is guaranteed to win hearts. So get your aprons on is time to put your heart and soul into whisking up our favourite dessert.  

Ingredients for the cake:

  • 120g unsalted butter 
  • 300g white caster sugar 
  • 2 large eggs 
  • 50g cocoa Powder 
  • 2tbsp red food colouring 
  • 1tsp vanilla Extract 
  • 300g plain white flour 
  • 1tsp Salt 
  • 240ml buttermilk 
  • 1tbsp white wine vinegar 
  • 1tsp bicarbonate of soda  

For the icing:

  • 250g full fat cream cheese 
  • 100g unsalted butter 
  • 600g icing sugar  


Prep: 25 min > Bake: 30 min> Ready in: 35 min > Serves: 9

Recipe for the cake

Preheat the oven to 180 C and line 2x20cm sandwich tins with baking parchment. Use an electric mixer to cream the butter and sugar together in a large mixing bowl whilst adding the eggs one at a time.

Add the vanilla extract and sieve the coco powder into the mixture. Sift the flower into a large bowl and then add the salt. Add half of the flower to the chocolate mixture and then half of the buttermilk.

Then mix well and add the other half of the flower to the buttermilk and continue to mix. Add two tablespoons of red food colouring to the mixture and continue to mix thoroughly.

Combine the white wine vinegar and the bicarbonate of soda in a small mug and then add to the mixture and combine the two together. Divide the mixture between the two sandwich tins and place in the oven for 30 minutes. Then leave to cool.

Recipe for the icing

Place the butter, cream cheese and icing sugar in a bowl and mix with a wooden spoon until smooth. Cover one layer of the cake with icing and then sandwich the two layers together. Cover the top and the sides of the cake with the icing.
